Witnesses Who Save People in the Workplace (Ephesians 6:5–9) June 1, 2025
Why the world grows more difficult by the day is clearly from human greed and spiritual problems. As believers, we must understand this root problem and hold fast to the answer of God (the Gospel). Because we could not save ourselves, God sent His son as the Christ.
What has God accomplished through Christ? He has restored all blessings. It is explained in Ephesians 1-4.
Ephesians 1. Jesus died for us, who possess fundamental sinfulness, enslaved to Satan’s power and human greed (1:7), He rose again (1:20), and by the Holy Spirit
He sealed us (1:13), and made us able to enjoy His power (1:19). He has given us the blessing of Salvation.
Ephesians 2. We are no longer slaves to the flesh, the world, or the “sons of disobedience” under Satan’s sway, but instead, by grace we have been made God’s people, His household and family, and now live under His reign (2:19). He has changed our spiritual status.
Ephesians 3. God’s plan in Christ was to save all the Gentiles through us who have been given this blessing (3:6). This is the blessing of World Evangelism. How is it possible? He wants us to go deep into His love and power (3:16) and take root (3:17). Why do problems come? They come so that we root deeply into His love and power in the Gospel. What kind of results will follow? will supply overflowingly more than we ask or think (3:20). That the secret for saving the world.
Ephesians 4. Now what must we do from here? Overcome all things and become united in Christ (4:3). Only then can we grow in strength. That is the mystery of the church community (4:12). Therefore, do not slander or speak evil of one another. Rather, show compassion, be kind, and forgive as Christ forgave you (4:31–32). This is the list of a believer (maturity).
Ephesians 5–6 is the conclusion. Where this life can be trained and enjoyed? It begins with family. That is why we cherish one another as spouses, obey each other, and love each other. Same for parent-child relationships, as well as relationships at workplaces.
- Why is the relationship at workplace so important?
1) If we are suffering at work, that influences the home and every other relationship. The bitterness that we experience on the job does not only destroy you. It destroys all relationships.
2) God will give evidence through everything that you experience at work (Romans 8:28, Acts 1:8).
① At first, you may make mistakes, be treated with dismissal, or face injustice. But our goal is that one day, that very workplace becomes a place where it bring you joy and happiness. It becomes a place where you experience blessing and even become a blessing to others.
② Ultimately, it’s all about relationship. You become someone of good influence and help. In time, that turns into a precious relationship. Abraham experienced this (Genesis 21:22), Isaac experienced this (Genesis 26:29). Even when the world grows dark, God blesses those who have this kind of testimony.
3) The fruit of that blessing opens doors for evangelism. When coworkers see you handling problems and conflicts differently, they begin to soften and open up about their own hardhips. This is the reason for God to bless you at work. You can save people in your field. You workplace can become a “field church” and pave the way for the 3 courtyards (healing, all nations, posterity). The 300% worth of blessings will then follow (100% of saving yourself, 100% of God-blessed professional specialty, 100% of saving the field).
- How do we build or transform these workplace relationships into channels of blessings? We must meditate deeply on the Bible and today’s scriptures and apply it.
1) Have faith in the fact that your occupation is a gift and inheritance from God.
① Psalm 16:6–7 says, the “Lord keeps my lot secure,” and the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places as a delightful inheritance.” Before you even enter a workplace, pray holding onto this covenant: “Lord, lead me to the place You have prepared for me.”
② Once you start working, don’t lose that conviction that “God opened this door because I prayed holding onto the covenant.” When you hold onto that promise, your workplace will be precious. You begin to give thanks, and find joy, passion, and vision there. Then, even when you make mistakes, face conflict, or suffer injustice, you can wait and endure. If you pray according to you schedule and continuously, God will give you wisdom and strength to persevere. Until you see the evidence God promised, do not be moved (by money, benefits, or hardships).
③ As your faith grows, also hold onto the covenant of “lighthouse and bartizan” (Isaiah 62:6–7). If your workplace feels dark and hopeless and full of discouragement, hold even more firmly to this covenant. Because it is dark and hopeless, it needs a lighthouse. Become the lighthouse that shines the light of Christ. It is not just darkness. There surely is work of Satan, who is the spirit of darkness. So even if it is only you, you must become the bartizan that can fight against the darkness in prayer. Then, God will post his angels as watchmen to work without rest (Isaiah 62:6-7).
2) It says to all workers (“slaves” in the time of the Bible) “Obey those above you” (5).
“Just as you would obey Christ.” What does that mean?
① Think of every supervisor as a person God has allowed over you. Even if they seem less qualified, you can follow and you can obey. That will become apparent, and it will build relationships.
② Don’t just do a “show for people” to please people. Serve from your heart “as to do the will of God” (6). Jacob is a model of this (Genesis 31:40-42). Joseph is a model (Genesis 39:3). Daniel, who was exiled and was under captivity, is a model (Daniel 6:26).
③ Serve wholeheartedly in joy “as if you were serving the Lord” (v. 7). As a believer, no matter what you do, you are never a “slave” of people. You are God’s servant that God uses. So serve “as to the Lord, not people.” Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do (8). People may assess us, but God assesses us. God is the one who lowers or raises (1 King 29:11-12). Even wicked King Ahab who worshipped idols recognized Obadiah’s faithfulness. He could not despise nor dispose of Obadiah.
3) God gave His word to the supervisors as well (9).
① It says, “Masters, treat your slaves in the same way” (9). Show them respect and never forget that each person under you is entrusted to you by God. When employees sense that genuine respect, their hearts open, and a deep bond of loyalty and devotion is formed.
② It says, “Do not threaten them” (9). Do not exploit or intimidate people for your own gain. This means having an insulting attitude. Because the Master of both parties is in heaven. Both parties will ultimately stand before God up above.
Conclusion – In this Word, we talked about “vocation,” “profession,” and “occupation.” In your life, may your workplace and businesses become your greatest happiness and blessings, and there, may you become witnesses to establish God’s kingdom.
